کتاب حاضر به بررسی چگونگی واکنش معماران، برنامهریزان و سایر کارشناسان مرتبط به زمینهها و گفتمانهای «توسعه» پس از جنگ جهانی دوم میپردازد. نمودِ تئوری توسعه فقط در حوزههای نظریۀ اقتصادی و سیاسی نبود، بلکه در هر حوزۀ ظهوری که دشواریهای اقتصادی ممکن است بر عوامل فرهنگی تأثیر بگذارد نظریۀ توسعه نمود پیدا کرد. در گفتمان توسعه معماری در حوزهای بین فرهنگ و اقتصاد قرار میگیرد؛ در این حوزۀ میانی است که معماران ردای بیان مدرنیستی برگرفتند و در عین حال به قراردادهای دولتی دستِ رد نزدند و خود را در فرآیندهای بوروکراتیک غوطهور کردند. این کتاب به بررسی این موضوع می پردازد که چگونه معماران، برنامهریزان، مهندسان سازه و دستاندرکاران مختلف محیط مصنوع برای مدت کوتاهی طراحی تمام حوزههای زندگی را، از نوعی موضع یکپارچۀ تخصصی به دست گرفتند. از این منظر، توسعه، به قول آرتورو اسکوبار، خود یک پروژۀ طراحی عظیم بود؛ پروژهای که مستلزم تحلیل بنیادی و بازاندیشی فراتر از چتر اصطلاحات «مدرنیسم جهانی» و «مدرنیتههای استعماری» است؛ اصطلاحاتی که این خطر را دارد که رگههایی از تضاد را که در مواجهه با جهانیسازی و مدرنسازی معماری پدید میآید پنهان کند.
مباحث کتاب شامل کشورهای مختلفی مانند غنا، یونان، بلژیک، فرانسه، هند، مکزیک، ایالات متحده، ونزوئلا، فیلیپین، کره جنوبی، سیرالئون، سنگاپور، ترکیه، قبرس، عراق، زامبیا و کاناداست و مقالات آن را نه میتوان جامع و نه یک «راهنمای میدانی» به معنای سنتی در نظر گرفت. در عوض، آنچه کتاب عرضه میکند نظرورزی «از میدان» بر اساس تحقیقات آرشیوی گسترده است. این کتاب صفآرایی قدرت، منابع، فناوریها، شبکهها و دانشی را بررسی میکند که حول اصطلاح «توسعه» پدید آمده است.
