The UN Development Programme (UNDP), in an alarming report about the banking and financial systems in Afghanistan, says that non-performing loans in the credit market have increased from around 30 per cent at the end of 2020 to 57 per cent in September of this year. As the run on banks to withdraw savings continues, UNDP projects that the deposits’ base would shrink by as much as 40 per cent by the end of the year.
