Truth and reality(haithya)

In a universe in which the two opposing powers of good and evil, truth and lies, constantly vie for supremacy, the average human being is constantly prone to being misled as to what is right behaviour, and the poet-sacrificer, even, is not exempt of this weakness. His concept of reality, that is, what "really, truly is"(Av. haithya, OInd. satya)as formed by observing the sensory data of nature and the inherited knowledge of his trade can still be wrong, and although he knows-he thinks-what is real, the danger of delusions caused by the powers of the Lie is ever-present. Therefore, he must always take precautions when conducting the ritual, to prevent any potential damage caused by a misunderstanding or error in his knowledge. The precautions can only be of a verbal nature and consist either in set "safety clauses" inserted in the verbal part of the ritual or in questions about what is "real"?

درستی و راستینگی(haithya)

در جهانی که دو نیروی ناسازگار، نیکی و بدی، پیوسته برای برتری‌یافتن با هم پیکار می‌کنند، انسانِ ساده پیوسته دستخوشِ گمراهی است که رفتارِ درست چیست؟ و سرودِ قربانی‌خوان، نیز، از این ناتوانی سوا نیست. پنداره‌ی او از راستینگی یعنی آن‌چه "به‌درستی، بی‌گمان هست"(اوستایی: haithya، هندوایرانیِ کهن: satya)که با دیدنِ داده‌های سهشیِ سرشت و دانشِ بازمانده‌ی دادو‌ستد شده‌ی او بنیان گشته، می‌تواند نادرست باشد، و گرچه او می‌داند-وی اندیشه می‌کند-آنچه راست است، بیمِ پریشانی‌های برگرفته از نیروهای دروج همیشه هستی دارند. بنابراین او همیشه باید در انجامِ آیین‌ها پروا کند تا آسیبِ گمانیِ سرچشمه‌گرفته از کژپنداری یا نادرستی در دانشِ خود جلوگیری کند. پرواها تنها می‌توانند چیستیِ گفتاری داشته باشند و دربرگیرنده‌ی جُنگی از "بندهای تندرستیِ" نگاشته شده در نسک‌‌های آیین یا پرسش‌هایی درباره‌ی این‌که راستینگی چیست؟ باشند.
