Organized religions are much concerned about our sexual morality; but they allow us to perpetrate violence and murder in the name of patriotism, to indulge in envy and crafty ruthlessness, and to pursue power and success. Why should they be so concerned with this particular type of morality, and not attack exploitation, greed, and war? Is it not because organized religions, being part of the environment which we have created, depend for their very existence on our fears and hopes, on our envy and separatism? So, in the reli- gious field as in every other, the mind is held in the projections of its own desires.

‌مذاهب سازمان‌یافته بیشتر دغدغۀ اخلاقیات جنسی را دارند؛ اما به ما اجازه می‌دهند تحت نام میهن‌پرست مرتکب خشونت و قتل شویم، در حسادت و بی‌رحمی حیله‌گرانه افراط کنیم، و به دنبال قدرت و تفوق باشیم. چرا آنها باید اینچنین دغدغۀ این نوع بخصوص از اخلاقیات را داشته باشند؛ و به استثمار، طمع، و جنگ حمله نکنند؟ آیا به این دلیل نیست که مذاهب سازمان‌یافته، که بخشی از محیطی هستند که ما ایجاد کرده‌ایم، برای وجود داشتنشان به ترس‌ها و امیدهای ما وابسته‌اند، به حسادت و تجزیه‌طلبی ما؟ پس، در حوزۀ مذهب نیز همچون هر حوزۀ دیگری، ذهن در فرافکنی تمایلات خودش نگه داشته شده است.
