Eidsvoll
17. Mai, Gratulerer med Grunnlovsdagen!
Short reminder why and what exactly Norway is celebrating today :
17may is a Norwegian Constitution day, NOT an Independence day.
Until 1814, Norway was part of the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway, under Crown Prince Christian Frederik.
After Napoleon's defeat in 1813- Norway was “passed on” to Sweden, and Christian Frederik started the Norwegian Independence Movement.
It was not completely successful, but resulted in National assembly in Eidsvoll where over the period of 5 weeks Norwegian Constitution has been written.
Ratified on 16 May 1814, and signed the following day-which Norways celebrates today- Hurra!
It took another 91 years for Norway to become Independent from Sweden, though.
Norway usually celebrates it's kinda birthday, as some refer to it, with children parades, marching bands , abundance of flags , traditional costumes and shampagne breakfast.
