Applications of Plant Extracts and Essential Oils in Different Industries
Abstract
Plant essential oils and extracts are sources of useful chemical compounds that have potential applications in medicine, food, cosmetics and agriculture industry. The extraction is the first important step in the preparation of this compounds. Natural medicines were the only option for prevention and treatment of human diseases for thousands of years. Therefore, natural products are important sources for drug production. The modern methods of extraction are effective in the development of these compounds, the compounds extracted from plants have natural antimicrobial activity on a large number of spoilage and disease-causing bacteria. Also the use of plant compounds in cosmetics and hygiene products, in addition to high marketability, has been useful for many beauty problems. On the other hand, In recent years, the agricultural industry has shifted more from conventional production systems to certified organic production systems, as consumers prefer products free of pesticide and herbicide residues, and certified organic foods command higher prices. In the agricultural industry, essential oils and plant extracts can be used as ingredients in plant antipathogens, biopesticides, and bioherbicides. Considering the age and importance of using essential oils and plant extracts in the pharmaceutical industry, in this chapter we tried to look at other aspects of the applications of these compounds in other industries.
