CRISPR/Cas9-Meidated Genetically Edited Ornamental and Aromatic Plants: A Promising Technology in Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals
Abstract
Ornamental plants as the decorative plants widely used for gardens and landscape design have been raised global attention for phytoremediation of heavy metals in soil and water due to their significant remediation capacity of heavy metals, fast growth, high biomass production. The efficiency of heavy metals phytoremediation from soil using ornamental plants is highly influenced by the crucial factors, including plant species, plant breeding and genetic engineering tools, target genes introduce suitable traits and/or improve the signaling pathway of abiotic stresses. Here, we summarized the present knowledge associated with protection mechanism and its molecular aspects of pollution tolerance by ornamental plants. We also focused on the genetically engineered plants and recent advances in genetic engineering using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing for phytoremediation approaches. Furthermore, we discussed risk assessments and regulatory approaches associated with environment protection, livestock, and human health for transgenic plants released in the environment.
