anas b. mālik said, "abū ṭalḥa was the wealthiest anṣārī in al-madīnah. he had a property opposite the mosque that was dearest to his heart, bayruḥāʾ. the prophet ʿalayhi al-salam used to enter it and drink from its sweet water. when the verse came down, ‘you will not attain piety until you spend from that which you love most,’ abū talḥa went up to the prophet ʿalayhi al-salam and said, ‘messenger of Allah, Allah has revealed, ‘you will not attain piety...’ and the property that is dearest to me is bayruḥāʾ, which I want to destine as charity. I hope that will give me piety and be a store thereof with Allah, so dispose of it in the way you think best.’ ‘excellent,’ the prophet ʿalayhi al-salam exclaimed, ‘that is a profitable property indeed. I think it best if you spend it on your relatives.’ ‘I will,’ abū ṭalḥa said, and he divided it among his relatives and his cousins.’"
