prophet muḥammad ʿalayhi al-salam said, "while a man was walking, he became thirsty. he went to a well and drank from it. afterwards he noticed a dog sniffing at the sand because of thirst. the man said to himself, ‘this dog is suffering what I have suffered,’ so he filled his shoe with water and held it for the dog to drink. Allah thanked him and bestowed upon him forgiveness for his sins. the prophet’s companions asked, ‘are we also rewarded for (kindness to) animals?’ he answered, ‘there is a reward for (kindness to) every living thing.’"
