"You have those who have only studied Uṣūl ath-Thalātha (i.e. a beginner), then he sits in the corner and gives rulings upon the people (by saying):

'So and so is a Ṭāghūt! So and so is a Jāhil (ignoramus)! So and so is a Mubtadi' (innovator)! Whoever does not declare so and so to be a Mubtadi' is a Mubtadi' himself!'

Fatāwā (verdicts) that are issued from the windows, from the corners of the masājid (i.e. from insignificant people), and from the homes of those who have not studied a single thing!

Have mercy upon the people! Rather, have mercy upon yourselves! This is a (severe) error! Study and learn!
"

Aḥmad b. al-ʿAbbās an-Nasāʿī رحمه الله said:

“I asked (Imām) Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal رحمه الله about a man who has a hundred-thousand aḥadīth with him, is he considered to be a Ṣāḥib (i.e. disciple) of Ḥadīth?”

He replied: “No.”

So I asked: “What about (a man who memorised or collected) two-hundred thousand aḥadīth? Is he considered to be a Ṣāḥib of Ḥadīth?”

He replied: “No.”

So I asked: “(What about) three-hundred thousand aḥadīth?”

He (i.e. Imām Aḥmad) moved his hand back-and-forth (i.e. gesturing 'maybe').”

Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah رحمه الله - the author of al-Muṣannaf - said:

“Whoever has not written twenty-thousand aḥadīth by hand is not considered a person of ḥadīth.”

"Disputation and arguments about sacred knowledge cause the light of knowledge to extinguish in a man’s heart."

2021-06-16 23:55:29 When Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله came across a group of people arguing, he would say:

"By Allāh, these ones have become bored of worship, speaking has become easy for them, and their piety has diminished, and that is why they talk and argue (so easily)."

2021-06-02 17:30:05 Shaykh Ibn al-'Uthaymīn رحمه الله said:

"The Noble Qurʾān - it is obligatory upon the student of knowledge to adhere strictly to reading, memorising, understanding and acting in accordance to it. Certainly, the Qurʾān is the strong and firm rope of Allāh, and it is the foundation of all sciences (in the religion). The Salaf (Pious Predecessors) used to adhere strictly to it, making this their goal.

In mentioning something astonishing about their strict adherence to the Qurʾān, you would find one of them had memorised the Qurʾān by the age of seven, whilst others had memorised the Qurʾān in less than a month! In this there is a clear sign regarding the strict adherence to the Qurʾān by the Salaf - may Allāh be pleased with them all.

It is therefore obligatory upon the student of knowledge to adhere strictly to it and memorise it under the guardianship of one of its teachers, because the Qurʾān is memorised through being instructed by a qualified teacher (i.e. it cannot be self-taught).

It is regretful that one finds some of the students of knowledge do not memorise the Qurʾān, nor do some of them even recite the Qurʾān well, and this is a huge defect in their approach to seeking knowledge.

Because of this, I reiterate that it is obligatory upon the students of knowledge to adhere strictly to memorising the Qurʾān and to act in accordance to it and invite to it and understand it according to the understanding of the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ."
