I have come to a point in life during which the passage of time doesn't really concern me anymore. I don't mind the fact that each year is rapidly going by, that each time I do the new year's countdown, deep down, I can't recognize how the shifting of a number is supposed to bring with itself anything "new". I'm the same person as 2021, better in some areas, worse in others; same as everyone else. There is no "new" me that magically replaces me during the course of the next twelve months, it's the same old me, going through different experiences, like a boat going into a different river.
At this point in life, I've come to the realization that what makes each year special, is not the number attached to it, it's the people, the moments, the memories, the feelings, that give each year its own unique meaning. And even though I'm generally a pessimist about most things, I don't want the light in my heart to die out, I don't want to let the cold overtake the furnace of my soul, I don't want my boat to sink in this vast and terrifying river called life just because I went through a lot of darkness. So to this end, I'll keep a candle lit, a hope; hope for my days to be better, for my year to be better, for my life to be better.
That's my reason to live; a single bright candle, pushing back all the darkness.
