‏من آداب المجالس والمحادثة أن تعلم متى تتكلم ومتى تنصت، فليس من الأدب ولا من المفيد لك أن تتكلم في فن مع وجود أهل الاختصاص فيه؛ كمن يتكلم في الحلال والحرام وهو ليس من العلماء، وفي المجلس عالم، أو من يتكلم في الطب وليس طبيبا وفي المجلس طبيب، في مثل هذا أنصت واستفد، ولا تفضح نفسك

"From the etiquettes of gatherings and conversations is to know when to speak and when to listen. It is not of benefit, nor from etiquette, that you speak about a subject when someone who specialises (in that subject) is present. Such as someone who speaks about the ḥalāl and the ḥarām and is not from the scholars, but a scholar is present in the gathering, or someone who speaks about medicine but is not a doctor, even though a doctor is present in the gathering. In situations like these, listen and benefit, and do not disgrace yourself (by speaking)."

"Do you know what a man is? A true man is he who finds himself alone with sins, and has the power to commit them and his lusts urges him to quench its thirst, but he thinks about Allāh looking at him, so he feels embarrassed from angering Him and thus his desire goes away.

But it seems that you only abandon things that you do not have desire for, or things that are not desirable in the first place, or even things that you are unable to have! This is your habit!"

‏إذا فتح الله عليك في باب قيام الليل فلا تنظر للنائمين نظرة ازدراء وإذا فتح الله عليك في باب الصيام فلا تنظر للمفطرين نظرة ازدراء وإذا فتح الله عليك في باب الجهاد فلا تنظر للقاعدين نظرة ازدراء. فرب نائم ومفطر وقاعد أقرب إلى الله منك. وإنّك أن تبيت نائما وتصبح نادما خير من أن تبيت قائما وتصبح معجبا ،فإنّ المعجب لا يصعد له عمل

"If Allāh opens for you the door of standing in Qiyām al-Layl (i.e. the night prayer), then do not look at those who are sleeping with a look of disdain.

And if Allāh opens for you the door of fasting, then do not look at those who break their fast with a look of disdain.

And if Allāh opens for you the door of jihād, then do look at those who sit behind and do not participate with a look of disdain.

Perhaps the one who sleeps, breaks his fast and sits behind, is closer to Allāh than you!

And indeed spending the entire night sleeping and waking up with regret (from missing the night prayer) is better than standing (for it) and waking up admiring oneself. For indeed, the actions of the one who admires himself are not accepted."

اعلم أن كثيرا من الناس يقضون السنين الطوال في تعلم العلم، بل في علم واحد، ولا يحصلون منه على طائل، وربما قضوا أعمارهم فيه، ولم يرتقوا عن درجة المبتدئين، وإنما يكون ذلك لأحد أمرين. أحدهما: عدم الذكاء الفطري، وانتفاء الإدراك التصوري، وهذا لا ‏كلام لنا فيه، ولا في علاجه، ‏والثاني: الجهل بطرق التعليم، وهذا قد وقع فيه غالب المعلمين فتراهم يأتي إليهم الطالب المبتدىء ليتعلم النحو مثلا فيشغلونه بالكلام على البسملة، ثم على الحمدلة، أياماً بل شهوراً، ليوهموه سعة مداركهم وغزارة علمهم ثم إذا قدر له الخلاص من ذلك أخذوا يلقنونه متناً أو شرحاً بحواشيه ‏وحواشي حواشيه، ويحشرون له خلاف العلماء، ويشغلونه بكلام من رَد على القائل، وما أجيب به عن الرد ولا يزالون يضربون له على ذلك الوتر؛ حتى يرتكز في ذهنه أن نوال هذا الفن من قبيل الصعب الذي لا يصل إليه إلا من أوتي الولاية وحضر مجلس القرب والاختصاص

"Know that many people spend long years on their journey seeking knowledge, be it even in one science; and yet they do not gain much benefit from it. They may even spend their entire lives on it, and still do not reach beyond the level of a beginner. This is for (either) one of two reasons:

1) Lack of innate intelligence, and the inability to conceptually perceive things, and we do not have words in this regard, nor in curing it.

2) Ignorance of the (correct) path and methodology in seeking knowledge, and this is what the majority of the teachers have fell into.

You’ll find the beginner student coming to them to learn Naḥw (Arabic grammar) for example, so they pre-occupy him with (technical) speech (regarding) the basmalah, then the ḥamdalah for days, infact months! Just to show off how aware they are and their abundant knowledge.

Moreover, if he is even able to finish from that, they would dictate to him a matn (concise text) or a sharḥ (explanation) with its ḥawāshi (footnotes), and the footnotes of its footnotes, and gather for him the disputes among the scholars, pre-occupying him with the words of who refuted this person, and how this person responded to that refutation.

And they remain giving examples to him of that kind, until it becomes fixed in his mind that obtaining knowledge is extremely difficult, wherein no one can reach it except for whoever has been granted (expert) companionship and was able to sit in close and exclusive gatherings!"
