Doctoral student in fluid mechanics and liquid-infused surfaces
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering mechanics
In the Fluids and Surfaces research group we focus on understanding mechanisms for the transport phenomena between flowing fluids and materials.
We are looking for a doctoral student interested in physics, scientific computing, and fluid mechanics. In this project, you will study the interaction between advanced surfaces and flowing liquids using numerical simulations. The goal is to tailor the geometry and chemistry of surfaces to control heat transfer and friction in a stable and efficient way. We want to develop principles for designing slippery and energy-efficient surfaces with anti-fouling properties in the presence of turbulent flows. This requires a basic understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms that govern the interaction between the large turbulent shear stresses from the flow, the turbulent transport of heat, and surface geometry and chemistry. Multifunctional surfaces will play an essential role in enhancing the energy efficiency of applications in transport and industry, and this project will accelerate the required technology.
