یکی از کاربردهای لغت "course"

کلمه "course" کاربردهای متعددی دارد؛ یکی از کاربردهای این کلمه معنی ‘دوره’ را بیان می کند. مثلا اگر شما در کلاس های آموزش زبان انگلیسی موسسه ای شرکت می کنید که ۲ سال به طول خواهد انجامید، تمامی کلاس های این دو سال روی هم یک دوره نامیده می شوند، یا مثلا اگر یک موسسه قصد دارد نحوه کار با کامپیوتر را در مدت زمان سه ماه آموزش دهد، تمام کلاس هایی که در طی این سه ماه برگزار می کند روی هم یک دوره نامیده می شود.

در خصوص نحوه استفاده از کلمه "course" فعلی که در زبان انگلیسی آمریکایی با این کلمه بکار می رود فعل "take" است "Take a course" یعنی در دوره ای شرکت کردن.

I’m going to take an Italian course.
قصد دارم در یک دوره زبان ایتالیایی شرکت کنم.

James took a course in music a few years ago.
جیمز چند سال پیش در یک دوره موسیقی شرکت کرد.

Wildfires in California

There are wildfires in California again because the forests are dry and the winds are strong. They spread fires quickly, and over 177 kilometres of land burns.
Thousands of buildings burn down and one town called Paradise is completely destroyed. Around 30,000 people lived there.
Around 250,000 people have to flee. Nine or more people die – five of them are found dead in their burned-out cars. In Malibu, the homes of Hollywood stars burn down, too. Everybody from Malibu is evacuated.

Elision* of d

"I prefer steamed potatoes to boiled potatoes."
One of the things that happens when we speak English fluently is that we don't always pronounce all the sounds in every word.
The words 'steamed' and 'boiled' 
both end in the sound /d/ and it's very difficult to say /d/ when it comes in between two other consonants.

The mouth has to do a lot of work. So in many cases the /d/ is not pronounced.
'Boiled potatoes' becomes: 
'boilpotatoes'.
And 'steamed potatoes' becomes: 
'steampotatoes'.
This is called elision of d.

Here are some more examples:

My best friend let me borrow his car.
Don't hold back, say what you mean.
His bike rolled down the hill without him.
