Iraqi President Meets His Iranian Counterpart, Raisi in Tehran
On Thursday, August 5, 2021, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with Iran's new President Ebrahim Raisi.
President Salih attended the meeting alongside the Foreign Ministers and other senior officials of both countries. The meeting was held in Tehran.
Issues of common concern in addition to the recent developments related- situation in the region were discussed during the meeting, while it is stressed that further ways can be created to enhance Baghdad- Tehran relations.
At the outset of the meeting, Iraqi President Salih congratulated Iran's new President, Raisi on his election as the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He wished him all the best for his term in office, and extended a message to all the Iranian, wishing them progress and prosperity.
President Salih thanked Iranian government for the invitation to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new President. Raisi thanked Iraqi President for accepting the invitation and visiting Tehran.
Brotherly and good neighborly relations between Iraq and Iran were discussed during the meeting. The two leaders emphasized the importance of the deep historical ties linking the two states.
Our two nations' relations have a long historical background, and are based on close social, religious, cultural, geographical bonds, they said, so these brotherly friendships have potential to serve the interests of the two countries and the region.
Both sides stressed the need to develop further cooperation between the two countries, and these should be developed across all the fields. Therefore, understandings and agreements signed between the two countries should come into force.
They are determined to further strengthen their economic relations and promote trade exchange.
His Excellency President Salih commended Iran's supportive role for standing by Iraq in the fight against the extremist groups known as Islamic State, (IS), who tries to undermine security and stability in the region.
Iraq firmly supports the stability of the states of the region, and works toward calming tensions there, and works to be a point of cooperation and inclusion for all regional and international states, he added.
Iraqi President emphasized how important it was to have further dialogue and understandings between the states of the region, where there can be further efforts and finding common ground to secure the pillars of regional stability and address the common challenges that pay no heed to borders.
This included confronting terrorism and extremism, and how to tackle with the heath crisis resulting from the spread of the coronavirus outbreak as well as how to adopt the measures to mitigate climate change risks and encouraging environmental sustainable and protection of environment for the benefit of the generation to come, he said.
Iran's President, Raisi stated that his country looks forward to further strengthening bilateral ties with Iraq at every level. The relationships, which are significant and privileged ties, between our two nations are based on social, religious and cultural beliefs, he highlighted.
Furthermore, he underlined that Iran remains committed to supporting Iraq's security and its stability, and hailed the tremendous efforts made by Iraq to bring about peace, security and stability in the region.
